The Micro Composition Project 2022 has commissioned four local composers to create short works of five minutes or less.

About this event

The Micro Composition Project commissions four short works annually to advance equitable new music opportunities for artists and audiences in Central Indiana. Now in its third year, the Micro Composition Project 2022 (MCP22) has commissioned four local composers to create short works of five minutes or less that will premiere at the AMP at 16 Tech on Friday, September 16. Classical Music Indy would like to thank our sponsors, Penrod Society, Taft Stettinius & Hollister, Bookkeeping Plus, and National Bank of Indianapolis, for supporting our program.

MCP22 is an artist-led initiative, with Classical Music Indy (CMI) encouraging the composers' work to reflect the world around them, create audience relevance and connections, and reconceive notions of genre. The composers’ only parameters are 1) the works must be five minutes or less, and 2) instrumentation must be for mixed chamber ensemble.

The MCP22 composers are Dr. Caroline Ahn, Dr. Jorge Muñiz, and Jared Thompson. CMI’s director of community engagement, Eric Salazar, will also participate artistically. As part of his leadership role at CMI, Salazar writes at least one new composition for a signature community outreach program each year. CMI’s open selection process ensures composers reflect a balanced representation of gender identity and ethnicity. The MCP22 works will be performed by one of Indianapolis’ leading chamber ensembles, Forward Motion, whose members are pioneering the city’s New Classical culture.

The MCP22 works will premiere on Friday, September 16, at the AMP at 16 Tech, an artisan marketplace and food hall at the convergence of historically Black and immigrant neighborhoods in Indianapolis. Located within a tech innovation district, the AMP’s emerging entrepreneurs share space with some of the brightest stars in the city’s culinary scene. The AMP is more than a food hall—it is a dynamic cultural center with community events and entertainment year-round.
